Overview
&ldquot; As schools and districts planned for a return to school in the Fall of 2020, social emotional learning had a critical role to play in helping students cope with the trauma of the prior months and overcome the learning loss that occurred in the spring. In collaboration with Tyton Partners, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation worked on a rigorous study of social emotional learning availability, adoption, implementation, and perception. The findings were based on a survey of 2,910 teachers, administrators and staff and interviews with dozens of providers in the SEL ecosystem&rdquot;. Challenges
Making a dense research project easily digestible
The biggest challenge in this project was making the dense research findings digestible to a broad audience. And to keep readers engaged through the 55 page report.
Solutions
Engaging illustrations, data highlights and quick-read data
The report findings incorporated survey responses from 2,910 teachers, administrators and staff as well as interviews with SEL providers. As such, it was dense and very data-heavy. In order to combat reader fatigue, I used companion visuals throughout the paper to break down various sections and convey overall themes. I used color and type systems to simlify data charts. And designed custom illustrations to support page content. Each main section was supported by an initial "key findings" section and that system was repeated throughout the paper and the same tactic was employed at the conclusion of each section. Finally, I employed large pull quotes to draw out main ideas, peppered throughout the paper. The report, in it's entirety can be seen here.
